My Take on K+12 – Additional Year in the Philippine Educational System
Posted by AmorCielo | Under Uncategorized Saturday Jun 4, 2011As per DECS, K+12 adds two years to the current 10-year basic education cycle purportedly to make it at par with global standards and be able to produce employable high school graduates. There will be no additional years in elementary; the additional years would be in high school.
Amor Cielo says: My take on the K+12, although the purpose or the intention of the proponents of this additional school year in the Philippine educational system is perfectly everyone parents dream for their kids – to give them the quality of education at par with the global standards, I feel that it is not ideal in our current educational set-up. I deem that before we must be able to successfully attain the global standards that we are aiming for, the government should first look at the current logistics involving the educational system. The following should be first address which has long been a problem ever since. Two of my maids from Mindoro experienced the following
- Classroom shortage – my maid can attest that in Mindoro there are classes held under the tree.
- Book Shortage – in their school those who are in lower section has a ratio of 1:7 usage.
- PC usage – only those in the first section has a chance to use the computers.
- Teachers’ low salary –Teaching is regarded as a noble profession; they should given proper respect and just compensation / benefits due to them.
- Teacher to student ratio – 45 to 50 students or more in one classroom.
- Lack of basic facilities needed to provide good learning environment – clean comfort rooms, laboratories, libraries, gymnasium, drinking fountain for potable water, clinic).
The government should first address the following logistics shortages and problems before they should implement this additional year in school. {Well, it is now for implementation L, but at least they should have considered, specially those who are in the remote areas}.They are implementing this new scheme when in fact they had not yet resolve the present educational condition of our country. Also, I do hope that there will be no corruption anymore, so the funds intended for the educational projects should really be implemented.

I agree with you. Adding two years to basic education is a good idea but they must first consider the main reason why most students couldn’t finish school in the first place.

yes i agree with you. I think what they really need to address is the quality of the way how they teach. Lalo lang nilang pahihirapan ang mga magulang.

I don’t think adding 2 years of school will improve anything. Besides our graduates fare exceptionally well than any other graduates from other nations (see my recent post about this). Additional years will stress out the kids and kids should not be stressed while at a young age. This is dangerous to their emotional development. Also, most parents have a hard time making ends meet while sending their kids to school and adding 2 more years will produce more burden than they can bear.
The Philippine government instead should improve the QUALITY of education, not QUANTITY .

i so agree! every year it’s always like this, schools lack these and those, teachers complain about a lot of things, etc. and now, adding up two more years, it’s no use, what will the students learn in two more years when almost every year, pabalik balik lang ang mga lessons???? haaaaayyy! nag-isip dapat muna sila bago inimplement. wala man lang public hearing??? or even asking the people’s opinions… kainis!

Hi Cielo…. thanks for dropping by my blog.. I’ve been crazy busy mom lately.. that is why.. it’s just now.. anyway…I actually in favor of the K12.. this is a way of coping up with global standards…
the problem as I see it actually lies on the implementation, the right right allocation, peoples mindset… and the political will… and everyone’s cooperation that this thing cannot be solved by government alone… it needs us to figure out why?

Yup, I do think that the government should first address the problems at hand, and not possibly create new problems with implementing a new educational system.

I agree with this post and the government should really take time to see what really the problem is.
